A warning is issued in CASSIS when overplotting different quantities, but this does not prevent from plotting the spectra (manual scaling is required in this case).

How the service was built

The current service is derived from the RELAB archive at Brown University (2025 version). Although remarkably consistent over a 40-year period, the archive fatally suffers from the absence of a community standard, metadata enlargement as new instruments were used, evolutions of data handling software, and apparently digitization of printed material at some point.
The archive consists in several catalogues (spectra, samples, instruments, PI… ) and two series of spectral files: a .txt version with a short header providing only sample ID and spectrum ID, and a .asc version with a longer tailer providing more information. The catalogues do not always include all this information but they integrate other sources.

The main table of the service was written by merging the RELAB catalogues, and completed to some extent with extra information available in the spectral files. The current restoration is independent from that in the PDS Geosciences service, although this was of course used as a reference point when solving issues.
– A global consistency check is performed on the spectra catalogue and minor corrections are made. All catalogues are joined in a single table describing one spectrum per row.
– The baseline is to maintain the indexing and description of samples available in the original archive. This may lead to some inconsistencies and occasional difficulties to locate the spectra.
– The service table describes spectra in compliance with the EPN-TAP protocol, which implies changes in keyword names and units (e. g., particle size is always in µm, spectral range in Hz).
– All spectra are provided as VOTable — xml files which are handled by VO tools for display and analysis. Although the VOTable header here is minimal, it is more regular that the tailer of the original ascii files at RELAB and can be parsed easily. Occasional encoding difficulties are fixed during conversion.
– Thumbnails have been produced to provide a quick visual diagnostic in the VESPA portal and other interfaces.

Only some obvious formatting issues and inconsistencies are fixed during ingestion both in the table and spectra, including:

sampleID was corrected whenever the value in the spectra catalogue didn’t match any entry in the sample catalogue. In most cases this results from incomplete string parsing, and restoring the value from the original file fixed the issue. The file value was not restored systematically however, as it sometimes resulted in further inconsistencies.

spectrumID was corrected when the value provided in the spectra catalogue didn’t fit the description, and when a correct match was found. A few examples were identified from inconsistencies in the metadata, but others may remain unspotted.

sampleName, if still empty after the previous corrections, is completed from the description provided in the spectrum file. This may not be always relevant.

For a small fraction of the archive (66 spectra) the sample description couldn’t not be safely restored from the available catalogues. This includes lunar samples and meteorites. In some cases they can be identified by target_name.

Occasional duplicates are removed, as well as catalogue entries with no corresponding file and a few outliers (external data converted to the RELAB format).

Illumination angles in the table are those from the spectra catalogue, which support searches for phase angle and photometric function.
Illumination angles are provided both in the files and in the spectra catalogue, but their values differ significantly. The catalogue values appear to be restored from more documented sources (perhaps experimental notebooks, sometimes free comment in the file tailer) even when the file keywords indicate a default configuration. They include the phase angle (consistently = i-e), and the emergence angle is often opposite to the value in the file, suggesting that it has been corrected when necessary. Altogether, the catalogue values are more informative and more consistent than the file values, in particular when considering experimental runs exploring phase function of given samples. Illumination is provided in the catalogue for only ~ half the dataset, but the all missing values correspond to file values of (i,e) = (0,0), (30,0), (30,-30) — which are either a default entry or a default measurement configuration.

The major differences with the Spectral library service at the PDS Geosciences node include:

the PDS service provides access to several other databases and is mainly an interactive tool. In contrast, the EPN-TAP service is easily scriptable and can be cross-searched with similar archives which comply to the EPN-TAP standard.

the EPN-TAP service is an agnostic port of the RELAB catalogues. Spectra with inconsistent description are removed only when they result in malfunctions, typically with duplicate spectrumID or when the file is absent from the archive. A total of 33795 spectra are recovered from the RELAB archive.

the RELAB section of the PDS service is instead limited to 23,598 spectra, suggesting filtering on quality criteria. In particular, poorly described spectra are removed and composite spectra from various instruments do not seem included in the PDS service.

the PDS service lists the illumination angles provided via the Source and Detection angles of the data files, plus the reconstructed phase angle. The EPN-TAP service maintains the values (i,e,phi) listed in the spectra catalogues, which are more consistent. Missing values always correspond to default configurations, either (i,e) = (30,0) or (30,-30).

Additional descriptive files (chemical analysis, sample photographs…) are only accessible via the PDS service currently.

Other major libraries of mineral spectra

Three other databases will benefit from an EPN-TAP interface and will be available for cross searches from the VESPA portal:

• The SSHADE service (Schmitt et al., EPSC, 2015) [published]: https://www.sshade.eu
including in particular the older GhoSST database (Schmitt et al. 2012, EPSC2012–960): Ghosst.osug.fr

• Berlin Reflectance Spectral Library (Henckel et al, EPSC 2017) [draft ready]

• The Berlin emissivity database (BED) (Maturilli et al., 2008, PSS 56, 420–425) [draft ready]

• The EPN-TAP RELAB service replaces a previous library in support to the CRISM experiment on MRO, which was affected by formatting issues.
